SEF is proud to have been appointed to undertake the environmental assessment for Africa`s largest township development - Cradle City.
Imagine building a City the size of Sandton from scratch. What would it entail if it were to be done with sustainable principles underpinning every aspect of the planning and development right from the beginning? No power outages, no traffic jams, no perennial construction due to widening of lanes and the installation of cables. Well, if it beats the imagination, read on.
The Client proposes to establish the 1000ha mixed-use and mixed-density Cradle City development, with an appropriate level of supporting social facilities and services. Cradle City incorporates the philosophy of live, work and play in the same environment. The Master Plan submitted to both the City of Johannesburg and Mogale City, as the relevant local authorities, envisions:
- A partnership with the City of Johannesburg, Mogale City local municipality, and the City of Tshwane (neighouring authority);
- An environmentally responsible and sustainable plan in order to utilize resources in the most efficient manner, and guarantee high levels of compliance with relevant environmental legislation. This includes obtaining environmental authorisation and complying with its relevant conditions;
- A plan that demonstrates and incorporates "inclusionary housing", which is in line with government`s "Breaking New Ground" programme to build spatially and socially integrated and sustainable human settlements and communities; and
- A plan that supports and enhances infrastructure development in partnership with government.
The SEF Cradle City project team is currently preparing the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). We are also undertaking a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) that examines the potential impact of a development of this nature, which goes beyond the limited (site-specific) scope of an EIA. We intend to be part of this vision and to make a contribution to a high quality development that promotes a sustainable way of living.
