Socio-Economic Impact Assessment for Fuel Stations
SEF takes a unique approach to the assessment of fuel stations and their impact on the biophysical, economical and social environment. It is critical for the impact in each of these sectors to be identified and managed in order to ensure a sustainable social and biophysical environment. SEF has compiled several such assessments for a variety of fuel companies throughout Southern Africa.
Summary
The Constitutional Court of South Africa determined that the potential socio-economic impact of the proposed Total filling station should be considered. SEF was consequently appointed to undertake a comprehensive Socio-economic Impact Assessment of the proposed new filling station.
The research team was faced with several constraints on commencement of the project, such as gaining reliable information on the sales levels of competitor filling stations in the region.
Within the constrains, SEF managed to successfully determine the potential impact that the proposed filling station would have on the sustainability and livelihood of competitor filling stations in close proximity to the proposed development site. The team also created a unique model to determine the potential socio-economic impacts of the proposed filling station.
SEF was able to provide a complete management plan to the proposed developers, guiding them in their decision making and enabling them to mitigate potentially negative impacts.
