City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality Wetland Audit
SEF undertook a wetland audit for the entire Metropolitan Municipality, with the intention of facilitating spatial planning and urban development decisions.
Summary
Opportunities provided by wetlands include flood attenuation, erosion control and water quality enhancement. Maintenance of biodiversity and the ability of wetlands to act as ecological corridors are valuable aspects of wetlands that link untransformed open areas and other areas of high conservation value.
The aims of this strategic wetland audit were broadly to identify areas where fine scale wetland delineations are required in order to inform spatial development and planning and to guide conservation and rehabilitation priorities.
Intensive stakeholder consultation formed an integral component of SEF's groundtruthing of the potential wetland areas identified through satellite imagery classifications and spatial modelling.
A total of 13407ha of wetland area was identified through analysis of multiple datasets, contributing significantly to sustainable development planning in the region.
