Summary

The KWS Augmentation Project has at its heart the need to increase the supply of water of sufficient quality and the surety of supply to the Duvha Power Station located south of Witbank in Mpumalanga.

Due to the imminent re-commissioning of the Komati Power Station, and the resulting increased demand on the KWS, the supply to the Duvha Power Station is experiencing increasing pressure. As a result, Eskom has had to resort to alternative water sources to supply water to the Duvha Power Station.

The proposed Komati Water Scheme Augmentation will entail the construction of an approximately 64km water pipeline from the Rietfontein Weir Pump Station to the Duvha Power Station with an off-take to Matla Power Station. The combined transfer capacity of the system is proposed to be 2.14m3 per second with 1.6m3 per second of the supply routed to the Duvha Power Station and the remaining 0.54m3 per second to the Matla Power Station.

The final EIA report was submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism in December 2008.
