SEF is compiling a waste management plan that incorporates international best practice as well as national waste management strategies and objectives.
Summary
Any waste management planning should give effect to the constitution and support an environment that is not harmful to the health or the well-being of residents.
SEF is developing an integrated waste management plan (IWMP) to protect the health, well-being and the environment in the region by providing reasonable measures for:- The avoidance and minimisation of the generation of waste
- The recovery, re-use and recycling of waste
- The treatment and safe disposal of waste as a last resort
- The prevention of pollution and ecological degradation
- Securing ecologically sustainable development while promoting justifiable economic and social development;
- Promoting and ensuring the effective delivery of waste services
- Remediating land where contamination presents, or may present a significant risk of harm
- Achieving integrated waste management reporting and planning
- Ensuring that people are aware of the impacts of waste on health and the environment
