Integrated Waste Management (IWM) allows for the optimisation of waste by maximising efficiency and minimising the associated environmental impacts and financial costs of waste. Furthermore, IWM allows for the definition of targets, activities, tasks, responsibilities, control procedures and the results/outputs expected, so as to optimise the management of waste.
Waste usually relates to materials produced by human activity. Management thereof is generally carried out to counter potential adverse effects on health, the environment or aesthetics. Waste management, involving solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances, is carried out to recover resources from waste disposal and requires different methods and fields of expertise for each sector.
