City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality Wetland Audit
SEF undertook a wetland audit for the entire Metropolitan Municipality, with the intention of facilitating spatial planning and urban development decisions.

Cogeneration Project in Big Bend, Swaziland
Ubombo Sugar Ltd, a member of the Illovo Group, appointed SEF to undertake an Initial Environmental Evaluation in order to assess the impact of a Cogeneration Facility.

Compilation of an Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP) for the West Rand District Municipality, Gauteng.
SEF is compiling a waste management plan that incorporates international best practice as well as national waste management strategies and objectives.

Eskom Hendrina-Prairie-Marathon
SEF conducted the Social Impact Assessment for the proposed construction of the Hendrina – Prairie – Marathon Transmission Lines.

Scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment for the Komati Water Scheme Augmentation Project
SEF was appointed by Eskom Holdings Limited to facilitate the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedure for the proposed augmentation of the Komati Water Scheme in the Emalahleni area of Mpumalanga Province.

Silverstar Casino
SEF is proud to have been involved in the impressive landscape design, installation and monitoring of the predominantly indigenous landscape for the spectacular Silverstar Casino.

Socio-Economic Impact Assessment for Fuel Stations
SEF takes a unique approach to the assessment of fuel stations and their impact on the biophysical, economical and social environment. It is critical for the impact in each of these sectors to be identified and managed in order to ensure a sustainable social and biophysical environment. SEF has compiled several such assessments for a variety of fuel companies throughout Southern Africa.

Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) for Eskom Electricty Network Master Plans
SEF was appointed by NETGroup to develop Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) that will support the development of Electrical Grid Master Plans for the following Eskom Field Service Areas (FSA); Pretoria FSA, Western Cape FSA, Margate FSA and Central Region (Northern Jhb) FSA.

Sustainable closure planning for the Steelpark Clay Quarry
Integrated closure planning incorporated the utilisation of waste to create a sustainable landform. (SEF in conjunction with Brian Rademeyer)

Automotive Supplier Park – Blue IQ
SEF’s landscape design for the Automotive Supplier Park in Pretoria encouraged the incorporation of the existing bio-physical habitat and landscape characteristics. This Landscape Design Policy, which echoes SEF’s philosophy of indigenous solutions, was achieved through the use and relocation of sizeable boulders and indigenous trees.

Betta Sanitaryware
SEF undertook the Environmental Assessment for the proposed construction of a waste water treatment plant on behalf of Betta Sanitaryware.

Borrow Pits
SEF has compiled Standard Environmental Management Plans for numerous borrow pit applications for linear developments across the country.

Boynton Platinum Mine
SEF compiled an environmental management programme report for the proposed new Boynton Platinum Mine in the Pilanesberg vicinity.

Clay Fusion Technologies
On behalf of Clay Fusion Technologies, SEF undertook the Environmental Assessment for the company’s proposed brickmaking plant at Ispat Iscor Limited.

Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism
SEF has been appointed by the Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism as a co-author to draft a chapter of South Africa’s 2nd National Communication on Climate Change. The project is partly sponsored by the Global Environment Facility, which funds projects that have been developed under the auspices of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. OneWorld Sustainable Investments and SEF will be responsible for writing the “National Circumstances” Chapter, which sets the scene for other chapters on issues such as Green House Gas Emissions Inventory, Vulnerability and Adaptation, Systematic Observation and Research, Vulnerability and Adaptation Strategies, etc. The team that is working on this project will be rubbing shoulders with other experts at the cutting-edge of Climate Change issues in South Africa.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality – Waste Transfer
SEF performed the Environmental Assessment and assembled the Environmental Management Plan for the Nigel Waste Transfer Station on behalf of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

EMM Gap Analysis
SEF conducted the Public Participation component of the EMM Gap Analysis for a new landfill site in the Northern Region of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

Environmental Education and Capacity Building Programme – Cape Winelands District Municipality
SEF compiled, coordinated and implemented an Environmental Capacity Building Programme on behalf of the Cape Winelands District Municipality. The purpose was to take in hand the legislative requirements as well as provide guidance for the execution of actions and a framework for the implementation of future projects.

Environmental Management Frameworks (EMF)
SEF has developed numerous Environmental Management Frameworks (EMF) for local, provincial and national governments. Recent EMFs undertaken include Mbombela EMF, Mangaung EMF, West Rand District EMF, GDACE Regional EMF, East London IDZ EMF, Emakhazeni EMF, Mogale City EMF and the Madibeng EMF.

Eskom – Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure
SEF conducted numerous Environmental Impact Assessments, including the:
• Kudu Integration Project 400 kV line from Oranjemund in the Northern Cape to Vredendal in the Western Cape (a distance of 400km);
• Mercury - Perseus 765 kV Transmission Line, Free State, which is 250km in length;
• Voorspoed 132 kV Distribution Line, Free State;
• Eskom Komati River Augmentation Project.


Eskom Hendrina-Prairie-Marathon
SEF conducted the Environmental Impact Assessment for the proposed construction of the Hendrina – Prairie – Marathon Transmission Lines. In addition to the EIA, various specialist studies were also undertaken as part of the process.

Eskom Spencer-Tabor
SEF undertook the Environmental Impact Assessment for the proposed Tabor – Spencer 275 kV Transmission Power Line. Both substations will also be upgraded and refurbished. In addition to the EIA, various specialist studies were also undertaken as part of the process.

Evaton Urban Renewal Project
SEF facilitated the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Master Plan process for the proposed Evaton Urban Renewal project. This Presidential project, linked to the millennium development goals, required a precinct upgrade, landscaping and installation of street furniture along major roads, the upgrading of government, sports and heritage facilities, small farms precincts and residential densification.

Gauteng Agricultural Potential Atlas (GAPA)
SEF developed the Gauteng Agricultural Potential Atlas (GAPA) for Gauteng Provincial Government. This tool is a scientific and objective GIS-based decision support system to inform and guide all development and land use decisions related to agricultural land in the province.

Highveld Steel
SEF undertook the Environmental Assessment for the proposed construction and operation of an electricity generation facility at the Steelworks site of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation Limited on behalf of Bateman Africa.

Innovation Hub – Blue IQ
Being involved from the inception and feasibility stage of the Innovation Hub Development has enabled SEF to positively influence this project. The design not only accommodated the existing natural systems but incorporated them into the urban fabric of this ultra-modern, technologically-advanced precinct.

Iscor
SEF undertook the Environmental Assessment for the proposed new Galvanising line at Ispat Iscor Limited, Vanderbijlpark.

ISCOR Sinter Plant
SEF undertook the Environmental Assessment for the Iscor Van der Bijl Sinter Plant project on behalf of Mittal.

Jock of the Bushveld
SEF undertook the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for the upgrading and extension of the Jock of the Bushveld Camp and associated infrastructure in the Kruger National Park.

Kalahari Manganese Mining Project
SEF conducted the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and compiled the associated Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for Kalahari Resources.

Lesotho Senqu Sources
SEF conducted a Strategic Environmental Assessment for the proposed Senqu Sources Protected Area in the Maloti Drakensberg region. The driving force behind the establishment of the protected area is to safeguard the unique biodiversity of the area, protect water sources, improve the condition of the grazing and provide community benefits through the establishment of tourism ventures.

Levendal Resettlement Plan
SEF provided a resettlement plan and relocation guidance to Levendal Developments as part of the rezoning, sub-division and redevelopment of an agri-village named Levendal, situated south of Paarl in the Western Cape.

Lonmin Platinum Mine Community and Social Risk Assessment
When Lonmin conducted a pre-feasibility study for its new mining operations in the Limpopo Province, SEF undertook the community and social risk assessment for the project. SEF’s involvement included a review of the environmental and community (social) studies that were undertaken for the existing Baobab Mine, as well as a gap analysis to identify major risks in the project.

Mittal Steel
SEF undertook a visual impact assessment for Mittal Steel for a proposed extension to the existing waste dump.

Municipal Infrastructure Grants
SEF compiled the pre-feasibility and Environmental Assessment analysis of the proposed waste disposal sites in Nkomazi, Malelane, Koornfontein and Matibidi in Mpumalanga.

N1 Menlyn Roads Upgrade
SEF and Mawatsan were jointly appointed by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) and City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to embark on an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed upgrade of the N1 National Highway between the R21 interchange in the South and the N4 interchange in the North.

Northwest Biodiversity Inventory
SEF compiled the Northwest Biodiversity Inventory for the Northwest Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment.

Open Space Management
SEF developed various open space management tools, including for the Johannesburg Open Space System phases 1 and 2 (JMOSS), the Gauteng Open Space Project phases 2 and 3 (GOSP), the Sedibeng District Open Space System (SDOSS) and Mogale Urban Open Space.

Pandora Environmental Management Programme Report (EMPR)
Lonmin and Anglo Platinum mines appointed SEF to conduct the Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Programme Report (EMPR) for the new Pandora Platinum Mine.

Social Impact Assessment - Eskom Komati Water Augmentation Scheme
SEF was tasked with compiling the Social Impact Assessment when Eskom proposed the augmentation of the Komati Water Scheme. The project comprised the installation of a water pipeline between the Rietfontein Pump Station and Duvha Power Station.

Social Services for Mining Right Application – Central Rand Gold
When Central Rand Gold SA planned to apply for new mining rights in Central Johannesburg, an area comprising 360km2, SEF provided an integrated list of social services, which included a public participation and socio-economic impact assessment, as well as guidance in terms of the compilation of the company’s social and labour plan.

Socio-Economic assessment for the Lesotho Wetlands Conservation and Management Plan
SEF was contracted to conduct a socio-economic assessment of the potential impact of a planned rehabilitation and conservation strategy for wetlands in the Highlands of Lesotho.

Swaziland Cogeneration
SEF executed the Environmental Impact Assessment for a cogeneration plant at the Ubombo Sugar Factory at Big Bend in Swaziland.

Swaziland Electricity Board
Environmental Impact Assessments and Planning for country-wide sub-transmission electrical infrastructure development was conducted by SEF on behalf of the Swaziland Electricity Board.

Visual Impact Assessment for Eskom
SEF assessed the visual impact of over 2 000km of proposed transmission lines in all nine provinces of South Africa. SEF’s visual assessments of the proposed Kendal and Vaal South coal-fired power stations considered the visual impacts on viewers up to 20km from the site.

Visual Impact Assessment for Royal Maluti Golf and Residential Eco Estate
SEF’s visual assessment of the timeless landscape of the Maluti Mountains contributed in part to the environmental context that guided the design of the Royal Maluti Golf and Residential Eco Estate, located not far from the historic town of Clarens.

Vlakfontein Quarry Mining Right Conversion
SEF was asked to submit the mining right conversion on behalf of the Vlakfontein Clay Quarry in Vereeniging i.e. converting from an old order mining right to a new mining right. The project involved submitting a Social and Labour Plan and Mine Work Programme, together with the accompanying legal documentation.

White Rivers Prospecting Applications
SEF compiled the application on behalf of White Rivers Explorations for prospecting rights across numerous sites. SEF facilitated the public participation process and compiled Standard Environmental Management Plans (SEMP’s) for these sites.

Xstrata Coal Closure Cost Assessment
SEF developed a quantum closure costing tool for three collieries in order to assist with projecting rehabilitation costs for the decommissioning of the mine.

Zestfontein Landfill Site
SEF conducted the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a proposed landfill site situated between Benoni and Bapsfontein.
